- What caused the Russian Revolution?
- Russia was ruled by an all-powerful Tsar while most people lived in poverty, which built up years of anger. The First World War then brought huge losses and food shortages, turning the country against Tsar Nicholas II. In early 1917 he abdicated, and later that year Lenin's Bolsheviks seized power.
- What did the revolution lead to?
- After the Bolsheviks took power in October 1917, a brutal civil war followed between the 'Reds' and the 'Whites'. The Bolsheviks won, and Russia became the world's first communist state — named the Soviet Union, or USSR, in 1922.
