- What caused the American Civil War?
- The central issue was slavery — above all, whether it would spread into new states. The industrial North increasingly opposed slavery, while the South's plantation economy depended on the forced labour of enslaved people. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, southern states seceded and formed the Confederacy, and war broke out in 1861.
- What did the war change?
- The Union (North) won in 1865, the United States stayed as one country, and slavery was abolished across the nation by the Thirteenth Amendment. But ending slavery did not bring equality straight away — segregation and unfair treatment lasted for generations, into the civil rights era.
